From my personal experience it seems that society is starting to unravel and a whole bunch of our fellow men are going feral. Time to review Operational Security (OpSec) and Information Security (InfoSec) procedures.
OpSec: shut up
Basic Operational Security: inform those who need to know. Burglars love it when people tell the world about their upcoming vacation. Tell people after you get back not before.
No surplus words or unnecessary actions.
Marcus Aurelius, Meditations 3.5Let your plans be dark and impenetrable as night.
Sun Tzu, Art of War
- Don’t ID your phone and laptop using your real name. If you have AirDrop or BlueTooth turned on, everyone can see that “Craig’s iPhone” is nearby.
- If you have interesting or unusual hobbies prohibited by law, never discuss them over the internet, phone, mail, in your home, car, restaurant, or pub. Take a walk instead.
InfoSec: lock your doors
Information Security means protecting data from access.
The only safe place to keep damaging letters is in the fireplace, between burning logs.
Judith Martin, Miss Manners’ Guide to Excruciatingly Correct Behavior, 1983
- Never let someone use your phone.
- Use full disk encryption on your laptop.
- Use an encrypted disk image for sensitive files even if your drive is encrypted.
- Use end-to-end encrypted messaging such as Apple Messages or Signal.
